I played Lake Chabot yesterday morning with an 8AM tee time on what was probably the best day for weather. I’ve been wanting to play this course and experience the infamous Par 6 hole. More on that later. In general it was a fun course with decent conditions at a reasonable price. As far as the overall condition of the course go, it was better than I expected. I was fearful that the fairways would be thin and bare. To contrary they were green with decent coverage throughout. Greens rolled smooth at a medium pace. Just a tad slower than I prefer, but in the acceptable range. Most greens are single tier with a traditional back to front slope. Greens are small here. And when I say small, I mean they make the greens at Del Monte look like Rancho Solano greens! Greens were receptive to approach shots and held well struck shots. I wasn’t in any bunkers and this course is light on bunkers. Tee boxes were flat with good coverage albeit with funky grass. Not an issue if using a driver with the ball tee’d up but could cause issues with an iron.

Now for the course layout. It sits on top of a hill so there are tons of elevation changes throughout. Course plays short so you will have a lot of short irons and wedges into the greens. Holes 14-16 have views of the SF bay, the City and the Bay Bridge so that was cool.

The oddest thing about the course is that the entrance road goes right through the middle of Holes 2-6. On an early weekday morning with little golfers out it wasn’t an issue but come prime time weekend, I see a lot of cars being hit with golf balls. Very odd! Speaking of elevation changes, I’m not sure if it was because I had a headache or if it was an optical illusion but most of the holes looked way longer than they actually were. Trust your numbers on you range finder, scorecard, GPS app etc.

Now for the infamous Par 6. It plays extremely downhill and really should just bee a par 5. I played two balls and one I hit into the right rough and had to punch out. Even with a couple poor shots I still had a 5’ putt to save “Par”. The second ball was a fantastic tee shot (that was probably in the top 5 of tee shots for me in the last 3 years). I followed that with a solid 4 iron for a second shot and had all of 80 yards left to the green for my 3rd. Still it was a lot of fun.

In fact i enjoyed the course as a whole. As I mentioned before, given the playing conditions, course layout and price, it gets a thumbs up from me.

Played a midweek round here with some buddies for a birthday and was looking forward to it as I had not played here in around three years. I always remember how tough this course is as it's target golf pure on the front nine and then eases up a bit until the last three holes get a little crazy again.

First off - big props to the starter as the person who booked our foursome online only actually booked a twosome, but they managed to move things around for us to accommodate all four of us and keep our 10:10am tee time intact. They even made sure we got the online rate so that was truly above and beyond and many thanks for that.

We played from the blue tees and rode as this is most certainly not a walkable course. The elevations and gaps between some of the holes would render this a six-hour round every single time. That did not stop us from having a slow round ourselves though, but that leaned heavily on our group as one of our players was very ... deliberate. One thing I had never seen before though - on the cart display we actually got a POP time warning that said if we received two more we would be asked to leave. I've NEVER seen that before! Luckily we never got another one as we kept better pace with the group in front of us after that.

In terms of conditions, well, the greens are by far the best part of the course. They were slower than they appeared though and I kept missing putts short all day. But the lines were true and the coverage was nice. Held shots well, too. The rest was not as great. Fairways are really thin in a LOT of areas, there's a lot of dirt patches and the rough isn't much better. The cart paths themselves dive into lots of construction zones and there's kind of chaos all around on many parts of the track.

Bunkers were very odd as well as on some of the early holes there was pure, white sand that looked like a country club, but I never landed in any of those. When I did finally find bunkers on the back nine, they were of the more 'rustic' variety meaning thin, dry and with a few too many pebbles for my liking. I don't quite understand the inconsistency but it is what it is. Tee boxes were generally fine with some a little more beat up than others but all level and playable.

We had cart service a few times on a VERY hot day so that was good, and the carts are pretty nice and have everything you need with a decent GPS system. One other thing that was odd that we noticed around the 17th hole was that there were no ball washers on any of the tee boxes? Or did we simply miss them? Some of the routing here is testy but we managed.

I'm not sure I would be in any rush to come back to Eagle Glen as it's a place that is a lot of fun when you're hitting your spots, but very frustrating and even 'gimmicky' when you're not. Conditions are simply not the best overall either, but if they were then it would be a fun challenge again, just not anytime soon I feel.

Played 6-2-24 in the morning as a threesome, finishing in about 4 1/2 hours with very little waiting. Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly level with decent coverage. Fairways were in really good condition, nice green Bermuda with great lies and decent roll out. Rough was in good shape, only about an inch longer than fairways and easy to hit from. Was in one fairway bunker that... » More

Played 6-2-24 in the morning as a threesome, finishing in about 4 1/2 hours with very little waiting. Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly level with decent coverage. Fairways were in really good condition, nice green Bermuda with great lies and decent roll out. Rough was in good shape, only about an inch longer than fairways and easy to hit from. Was in one fairway bunker that had a decent layer of firm sand. Greens were in good shape rolling smooth at medium/slow pace. and playing semi-soft. Overall good conditions on a fun track.

Played Sat 6/1, 8am. Beautiful day. Sunny and clear, mild wind. Course runs through houses. Interesting track. Has water features throughout. Lots of interesting shots... elevation, doglegs... Don't see the ocean until 17, and then 18 is the best looking hole on the resort. Actually 15 -18 is a fun finish. Greens seemed to be struggling a bit... lots of pockmarks made... » More

Played twice, Fri 5/31 and Sun 6/2. Tale of 2 planets... Friday at 2pm, gorgeous day... warmish, clear, no wind. A pretty fun course. You can see the ocean from most of the course, with the finishing 2 holes right on the coast. Actually, #1 runs out towards the coast as well. This course is more linksy, wider off the tee.. but if you are too far off, you get into the hay, ... » More

Played twice, Fri 5/31 and Sun 6/2. Tale of 2 planets... Friday at 2pm, gorgeous day... warmish, clear, no wind. A pretty fun course. You can see the ocean from most of the course, with the finishing 2 holes right on the coast. Actually, #1 runs out towards the coast as well. This course is more linksy, wider off the tee.. but if you are too far off, you get into the hay, and it's mostly lost. Greens were running a fast 10... mostly true. Big and undulating. Lots of fun holes. The second day had a drizzle all morning. Fog. Cold. 1-2 club wind. Teed off at 8, cleared by noon, when we were playing 17. 17 is a great par 3 on the coast. 18 is a wild par 5 tee up to the blind fairway, and coming in to the hotel framed nicely. Beautiful hole. Hope to get back here someday.
